Most of us have our favourite influencers or groups we like to follow on social media, whether it be looking for inspiration or following our favourite brands on Instagram, following a YouTube channel or asking questions in a group on Facebook just to name a few.
But what if the information you were gleaming was not exactly accurate or worse still dangerously false?
Yesterday a client sent me a query, you see some information I had given her did NOT match the information she just saw on an ‘Instagram influencers’ story. I promptly looked into it.
Before I reveal the ‘miss’-information and show you some safer mobile settings that truely lower your exposure to a known carcinogenic environmental toxin, I want to acknowledge that researching products is time consuming and I understand how difficult this can be for most busy mums. That is why I have a small sample of products available for purchase as well as a curated list of products and services which I am constantly adding to which I have personally vetted which meet my strict criteria.
Ok back to the post. Here is the context:
- The Instagram account has 14K followers
- It belongs to a network marketer
- The account holder also went to University and has a double degree- one being law! (However her Instagram account is all about helping “network marketers fast-track to 5 figure months.”
And here is a screenshot from the offending Instagram story (which at the time of writing has since timed out- thank goodness).
The story alleged that by copying the settings being promoted you could use your mobile phone more safely.
As an individual dedicated to empowering people with the science and CORRECT information about environmental toxins, so that they may make informed choices I love the intention of trying to inform people BUT THE INFORMATION IS WRONG!
Yes the radio frequencies emitted by mobile phones are problematic and as such, educating people on how they can use their devices more safely is a big part of what I do (especially when children are involved because the potential for damage is exponentially greater).
And that there is also exactly why I am furious at such negligence. The subject of electromagnetic fields and safety is too important. The technology has been rolled out so quickly and there is an overwhelming number of individuals not understanding the technology they have in their possession.
Social media has seen the rise of ‘I quit sugar Susie’, ‘low tox Laura’ and ‘detox Debra’ but what are their credentials?
Are they certified naturopaths? Are they qualified nutritionists? Are they doctors or allied health professionals?
Some maybe. But A LOT are individuals on their own journey whether it be overcoming a health issue, endeavouring to optimise their health and wellness or simply to make a quick buck.
We are in the age of knowledge where we can access information by simply typing a few words into a device but the information you access, needs you to be more savvy than ever in making sure you are accessing the correct information. Add to that, the rise of social media and our innate FOMO amongst other things and now we have compounded that task as we sift through clever marketing sold to us through influencers.

I implore you to do your due diligence on the information you access from anybody before you implement low tox strategies or purchase any products a person tells you helps them do so. Even if a person says “I know/use/do this because my ‘insert here a professional’ told me”. The information is secondhand at best and they be missing key information integral to YOUR situation.
I am so thankful my client checked in with me before trusting the information she had come across. I hope that anyone else that came across the negligent and completely false information discards it also.
For anyone wanting to know how to minimise your exposure to radio-frequencies from your apple mobile device correctly, here is an extremely brief overview of a few settings I teach my clients.
First here is a screenshot of what you want to see whilst your phone is in aeroplane mode:
If needing to use your phone to make a call or send an sms then your phone in the following settings is what you are after:
If you need to use mobile data, that is to send an iMessage, check your emails or peruse Instagram (wink) then with my Building Biology hat on, hardwire your device to a cabled internet, however if that is not an option, turn on your phones mobile data:
Or if you want to connect wirelessly to a locations internet then, and only then, turn on your wifi and/or Bluetooth (and turn off your mobile data, it is superfluous to have it on). Please note that if you do not have a line literally crossing out your wifi or Bluetooth then they are on and searching and yes that means you are being exposed unnecessarily. If you have turned them on, you generally need to go into your phone settings to turn them ‘fully’ off.
